@mappingmashups Welcome everyone to our monthly #geowebchat! Today we’re talking about “outdoor mapping”. Feel free to join the chat or just follow along!
@TheMissingMaps We’re not outdoor mapping, but here’s a wave for everyone on #GeoWebChat from #MissingMaps London https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CLliMmkWsAA5pq2.jpg
@mappingmashups So if you want to join the #geowebchat, just make sure to include that hashtag in all your tweets. Try tweetchat.com/room/geowebchat for following.
@mappingmashups So, I certainly had @openstreetmap in mind when I suggested this #geowebchat topic, but we can talk about any kind of outdoor mapping.
@mappingmashups The @OpenStreetMapUS #mapathon in spring was “great outdoors” themed. Did anyone join? What did you map? #geowebchat wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapathon/…
@bethschechter Hey everyone! I’m really interested in hearing what kind of outdoor mapping activities people have done. #geowebchat
@bethschechter Did you use @fieldpapers? Did you learn orienteering? Were you using surveying tools? What was the purpose? #geowebchat
@bethschechter I want to know all the things! I’m also interested in maps about the great outdoors. #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @eleanortutt Did some people choose one tool and stick with it, or did everybody use a lot of those tools during the day? #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups I gave an intro listing those tools & a few more & people picked the one that suited them best. #geowebchat
@eleanortutt I like Field Papers b/c I can convert random people outdoors to mappers by handing them a map to mark up – no apps required #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @eleanortutt Did the mappers using @fieldpapers trace the maps themselves, or did other people do it? Curious about that with FP #geowebchat
@mappingmashups That’s also a question for the @TheMissingMaps mappers in London: are you tracing from @fieldpapers or from aerial imagery? #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups In this particular case, only one person used @fieldpapers & he traced himself. #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups But in the past, I’ve handed @fieldpapers to people & told them to just upload a photo whenever they are done. #geowebchat
@mappingmashups .@eleanortutt W/ tools like @fieldpapers & now @mapillary, sometimes the surveyor isn’t necessarily the one to add it to OSM. #geowebchat
@mappingmashups .@eleanortutt I guess that’s also true whenever you’re tracing from others’ GPS traces like w/ @Strava’s slide tool. #geowebchat
@npdoty @fieldpapers I want to use field papers to get a bunch of neighbors to map the locations of all the trees in Oakland. #geowebchat
@eleanortutt Might also make sense to do outdoor mapping with @fieldpapers in fall when weather is nice & then digitize indoors during winter #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON #geowebchat How I am expermenting with outdoor mapping: mapillary.com/map/im/44QY4Kj…
@mappingmashups @npdoty @fieldpapers & species too, & maybe even approx height? You can sometimes map trees from aerial, but not much metadata #geowebchat
@TheMapSmith No channel for outdoor mapping (yet), but theres lotsa geo-convos happening @ The Spatial Community Slack thespatialcommunity.com #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @ER1CK5ON Are you walking or biking in that @mapillary photo? #geowebchat I’ve wondered abt improvising a kind of @mapillary walking vest
@BobGradeck #geowebchat favorite time to map trails is during winter. Easy to see tracks in snow, and no leaves makes for a better GPS signal.
@eleanortutt @BobGradeck But…cold! Rather be inside w/ hot cocoa. Side note: snow (tracks/lack thereof) also helps w/ vacant bldg surveys #geowebchat
@pcrickard There is a #geowebchat now. @Ellevatory
@mappingmashups RT @npdoty: yeah, I’ve been marking height and diameter (with standardized tags); species would be good for health research #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups @npdoty I learned some munis have staff arborists – worth checking & involving them if they exist where you are. #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @ER1CK5ON @mapillary The action cam is to steady the shots? I can see that, too much bounce, huh? #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @eleanortutt @npdoty Also worth checking, is there an #Oakland equivalent of @SFUrbanForester? #geowebchat #trees #SF
@bethschechter does anyone have experience with using a geo data collection app that collects both the path your on + easy point collection? #geowebchat
@bethschechter I’m thinking of the use case of bike mapping. You want to be collecting your path, and then easily switch to adding a point. #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON #geowebchat I started down the same path ;-) and discovered this: bit.ly/1TEDqIZ and this amzn.to/1IWdWnO
@bethschechter @calimapnerd @calimapnerd cool. i had some trouble using it, but that was years ago. I should try again :) #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON @mappingmashups @mapillary I dont know yet, have to get out and test it #geowebchat
@TheMapSmith We’ve used ArcGIS Collector with great success over the last few summers to collect field data. Very easy to setup, easy to use. #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON @BobGradeck good point, fall and early spring good time here in VA too! #geowebchat
@eleanortutt Good to know. Still searching for perfect app. Mentioned OSMAnd at mapathon but haven’t personally used. #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @bethschechter I think a lot of bike mappers use a voice recorder and then transcribe their notes later using gps + timestamp #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON @bethschechter my old garmin edge 305 allowed POI collection by hitting a button. It has to have improved since that version #geowebchat
@mappingmashups Anyone have experience doing outdoor OSM mapping w/ a group & dividing up territory? Curious about this: wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MapCraft #geowebchat
@bethschechter nice! thanks for the advice y’all #geowebchat
@talldave @mappingmashups Shawn Britton does a lot of that meetup.com/Bay-Area-OpenS… #geowebchat
@Ellevatory Thanks, what is the topic of #geowebchat?
@mappingmashups Is MapCraft the best (or only) tool for making Cake Diagrams? Do most mappers do them by hand or w/ GIS? #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @Ellevatory @pcrickard We’re talking about outdoor mapping today. #geowebchat
@neogeografen On bike – Mapillary fits for easy&quick collect. surface=XX, lit=yes/no and barrier=cycle_barrier and finding new paths #geowebchat
@mappingmashups What tools do you wish existed for easier outdoor mapping? What’s missing? How can we make it more effective and fun? #geowebchat
@tim_waters @mappingmashups print out a map, meet mappers, draw on the map. Much easier and interactive and you get to chat with the mappers #geowebchat
@Ellevatory Yo #geowebchat, I’m a regular over at #gistribe, what is your hashtag all about and does it reoccur e.g. weekly?
@mappingmashups @Ellevatory #geowebchat is monthly on the 1st Tuesday. More info here (plus transcripts) mappingmashups.net/geowebchat/
@Ellevatory This stuff looks really cool – 3D augmented reality map – youtube.com/watch?v=CE1B7t… #geowebchat
@ER1CK5ON @mappingmashups AFFORDABLE GPS Cameras with GPS Voice Tagging, Sunlight Readable Display, Endless Nice Weather??#geowebchat
@Ellevatory Thanks mate! #geowebchat
@bethschechter @Ellevatory that is totally one of the coolest uses of AR I’ve seen! The @exploratorium should get one of those :) #geowebchat
@skorasaurus for outdoor mapping, I use voice recording w/ osmtracker, + @mapillary although my s5′s camera focus results in blurry photos #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups Random thought: would be cool to get notification when I’m near another mapper – maybe my OSM “friends” #geowebchat
@mappingmashups Any last thoughts about outdoor mapping for this #geowebchat? Maybe next chat should be about the opposite: armchair mapping?
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups Although maybe by cool I mean creepy – it would depend on my mood. But might help coordinate mapathons. #geowebchat
@ColinReillyNY @mappingmashups for trees there’s @TreeKIT being used by @NYCParks for TreesCount nycgovparks.org/trees/treescou… #geowebchat
@KubaKonczyk @Ellevatory it’s also quite easy to build using old kinect:D #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @eleanortutt That would be cool. OSM definitely needs more enhanced social features. See: brainoff.com/weblog/2012/03… from @mikel #geowebchat
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups Would also be helpful to easily add custom CartoCSS styles to @fieldpapers basemaps #geowebchat
@mappingmashups Thanks all for joining this #geowebchat! Next one will be same time on September 1st. As always I’m seeking guest hosts & topic suggestions!
@MAPTIMELA @mappingmashups I @machikoyasuda want to map trails w/ POC/Native stories like pri.org/stories/2014-1… foresthistory.org/ASPNET/People/… #geowebchat
@mappingmashups The transcript for this #geowebchat about outdoor mapping will be posted at mappingmashups.net/geowebchat in a few days
@eleanortutt @mappingmashups Thanks for hosting! #geowebchat
@bethschechter @tvargs no idea! I should look it up though :) #geowebchat thanks for the lead!
@ER1CK5ON Future topic? Unmapped trails, getting them in OSM!!#geowebchat
@bethschechter @mappingmashups thanks for putting this together! So helpful! #geowebchat
@Ellevatory Since the topic is outdoor mapping, it makes me I wonder what kind of mapping is not done outdoor? #geowebchat
@mappingmashups @Ellevatory There’s a concept in #openstreetmap called “armchair mapping” which isn’t done outdoors wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Armchair_… #geowebchat
@Ellevatory Interesting @mappingmashups I did not know of this until Nepal earthquake, it puzzled me ppl mapped but hadn’t been there #geowebchat
